15th May, 2001 - Martlesham Musicmakers and Project Martlesham 2001

What is Martlesham Musicmakers?
Martlesham Musicmakers(MM) was formed in January 2000. The aim is to provide an opportunity for residents of Martlesham and the immediate area to meet together and to make music. MM will particularly benefit young people and help them develop as musicians through working with others in the community and whenever possible, professionals. Currently four groups belong to MM, namely Birchwood Primary School, Kesgrave High School, Martlesham Brass and The Kesgrave Youth Club.

The secretary and coordinator of MM is Pauline Allen who is County Advisory Teacher for Music for Suffolk. Over the last few months, Pauline has been working very hard to bring the project together and Martlesham Brass were very pleased when she asked us to get involved.

About Project Martlesham 2001
MM has been awarded two grants totalling £10,200 from Awards for All (Lottery Grants for Local Groups) and The Performing Right Society Foundation for the first project. MM has formed a strong partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) who are working with the composer, Rachel Leach, and the Education Department from the LSO.

Rachel has written a short suite of pieces for the Martlesham Brass main band and 6 players from the LSO. Rachel is also leading workshops with pupils and students from the schools and the youth club to compose pieces of music that will slot into spaces in the suite.

Five LSO players (Rod Franks - trumpet, Gerry Ruddock - trumpet, John Ryan - french horn, James Maynard - trombone and Patrick Harrild - tuba) have already given a short concert at St Michael's Church for everyone who is taking part in the project. They have also been working with Martlesham Brass and brass players from Kesgrave High School to prepare the project music for performance at the Concert Hall, Snape Maltings

The project music and other pieces will be performed at Snape on Monday 21 May at 7pm.
